Frequently Asked Questions
Your health care provider has ordered a blood test that uses a blood sample that can be collected with the Clara Spot™ Collection Kit. The CLIA-certified (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) laboratory that provides testing services, inculding those that measure hormones such as hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in your blood will perform testing per your provider’s order.
During pregnancy, the body makes a hormone called hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin). Detection of hCG in your body is used to determine pregnancy status.
Blood samples collected a few days apart are tested to show how the level of hCG in your body is changing. Your health care provider will help you understand what your hCG levels mean.
The Clara Spot™ Collection Kit includes everything you need to collect up to two blood samples, including detailed instructions. You can find instructions here that walk you through the process.
Twist and pull the safety cap off the Lancet. Then hold the Lancet between two fingers. Place it against the finger you wish to draw blood from and press down until you feel a prick. Then lift it off your finger.
You can find detailed instructions here that walk you through the process.
Please note: Under no circumstances should you use items other than the Lancets and other materials included in your Clara Spot™ Collection Kit to prick your finger to collect your blood samples. If you require additional Lancets, please contact support.
- You may find it helpful to have someone assist you in the collection process.
- Ensure that your hands are clean and warm by thoroughly soaking your hands in warm water or taking a warm shower. If you have calluses on your fingers, we suggest soaking your hands in warm water to soften the skin before collection.
- Promote adequate blood flow by swinging your arms by your sides beforehand.
- The best site for a finger puncture is to the right or left of the fingertip. You may find it helpful to place your finger on a firm surface, like a countertop to ensure that you get the proper depth when activating the safety Lancet.
- If you find that a drop is not forming, it's helpful to promote blood flow by massaging from your wrist down to your fingertip.
Your health care provider can help you set up your account in the online portal and walk you through the steps of the first sample collection. Should you need to collect a second sample, instructions are enclosed in your kit that can be downloaded here.
You can also contact support for assistance with your portal or accessing your results.
Some people may notice soreness or mild bruising after a finger stick, which usually heals on its own. However, if the discomfort lasts longer than what you’re used to, it’s a good idea to check in with a health care provider.
Your Collection Kit will contain a prepaid FedEx® return envelope.

The most common reason for rejection is insufficient blood on the Sample Card. At least four circles must be fully filled without overlapping drops (see detailed instructions).
Other frequent issues are not setting up your account and registering your Sample Cards or Sample Cards missing patient information, such as name or date of birth, or not matching what was provided at registration.
If you think your sample was collected or labeled incorrectly, contact your health care provider for next steps.
You will be notified when your results are available in your online portal. Contact your health care provider to review them and discuss next steps, as needed.
